Summary:

This CET will explore how to safely manage and care for patients, in light of COVID restrictions & GOC guidance continuing to allow remote aftercare consultations. The session will be delivered via Zoom PRO, and will consist of a mixture of slides with breakout discussions.

Part 1 - Delegates will initially reflect on the current GOC, College of Optometrists, ABDO, AOP and BCLA guidance, and discuss their current practice with their peers – sharing what is working well and any challenges they are facing. Delegates will then be asked to consider and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both face to face and remote consultations, focusing on the clinical, legal and moral aspects.

Part 2 – Delegates will consider the adaptations required to safely manage contact lens aftercare patients. They will firstly consider which patients they feel are suitable for remote aftercare, and those who are not, and how best practice staff can manage appointment booking in a busy clinic. Delegates will discuss a patient scenario and discuss best practice in caring for this patient remotely, and any adaptations needed to their normal routine if they were to see this patient face to face. They will consider adaptations to their communication, and consider alternative methods of ocular examination.

Part 3 – The last section will focus on new contact lens fits, where delegates will be asked to consider and discuss the adaptations required to safely fit new contact lens patients. They will consider how best to prepare the patient for the appointment to minimize contact time in the practice, and also how to safely conduct contact lens teach. Delegates will also consider an appropriate follow up schedule to optimise patient experience and minimise patient disatisfaction.
